New faces join Bournemouths top political team

PRESS RELEASE - 10 June 2009

Cllrs Nicola Greene and Jane Montrose will join Bournemouth Council’s ten-strong Cabinet, with immediate effect.

Cllrs Greene and Montrose replace Cllrs Peter Charon and Nick King.  Cllr Charon will be taking up a key role in the new decision-making structure of the Council in relation to Overview & Scrutiny, whilst Cllr King is choosing to spend more time dealing with Ward issues and preparing for his role as a prospective parliamentary candidate for Mid-Dorset and North Poole.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Stephen MacLoughlin said:  “I am delighted to welcome Jane and Nicola to the Cabinet.  Jane’s experience in social care and Nicola’s knowledge of children’s services means they are well-placed to make the most of the opportunities within their respective portfolios and to serve local people.”

The full Cabinet is:

Cllr Stephen MacLoughlin - Leader

Cllr John Beesley - Deputy Leader; Resources portfolio

Cllr Bob Chapman - BIC / Pavilion

Cllr Malcolm Davies-  Children’s Services

Cllr Beverley Dunlop - Leisure and Tourism

Cllr Barry Goldbart - Adult Services

Cllr Nicola Greene - Learning

Cllr Robert Lawton -  Environment and Transport

Cllr Jane Montrose - Homes

Cllr Dave Smith - Community

Cllr Greene said of her appointment: “I am absolutely delighted to be joining a Cabinet of such experienced Members.  I care a great deal about education and look forward to delivering some real achievements for children and young people in the coming year.”

Cllr Montrose commented: “My background is in homes and social care and I am passionate about providing excellent services.  I am confident that I will make a real difference to the quality of life of vulnerable people and their carers and families.”

Cllr MacLoughlin paid tribute to the two years commitment of Cllrs King and Charon, saying, “I would like to thank Cllrs King and Charon for the contribution they have made to both Cabinet and the Council as a whole over the last two years.  Cllr Charon has been instrumental in securing up to £10m savings for the Council through his role in the negotiation of the Council’s housing maintenance contract.  Cllr King played a key role in working with local people to fight government plans to develop the green belt in the north of the town.  He will continue his campaign for better planning across south east Dorset, which takes proper account of the views of local residents.”
