Household Recycling Collections - Big Bin
Information about how you can recycle at home
We are having ongoing problems with recycling that contains items that can't be recycled. Textiles (e.g. clothing, bedding, towels or linen) and electrical items can't be recycled in your Big Bin. Why not take these to Neighbourhood Recycling Centres or Millhams Household Recycling Centre
When do I put my bin out?
We empty your Big Bin once every 2 weeks on the same day as we empty your Little Bin.
Please put your Big Bin out by 5.00am on your bin day.
If you want to put your bin out the day before, you can put it out after 6.00pm. Please bring it in as soon as you can so it doesn’t block the pavement.

Where should I put my bin for collection?
Place your bin where we can see it easily. You could put it:
- At the end of your drive.
- At the end of your garden path.
- On the pavement, close to your house.
If you have a gate, please leave it open for us.
What if my bin isn’t emptied?
You might want to double check you have the right bin day. Remember we only empty Big Bins once every 2 weeks.
If your bin hasn’t been emptied on the correct bin day, please wait until the next day, if your bin still hasn’t been emptied you can report it.

What can I put in my Big Bin?
Your Big Bin (240L) is for household recycling.
Please put the following items in your Big Bin:
- Cans, tins and aerosols (but not butane or propane aerosols)
- Glass bottles and jars
- Plastic bottles and food containers
- Food and drink cartons
- Foil and foil trays
From 3 October, you can recycle even more items at the kerbside. We will be collecting household batteries and small electrical items, measuring no bigger than 30cm x 20cm x 20cm, alongside your other recycling. Find out more about recycling Electrical items and batteries.
If you don’t have a recycling bin or you’d like an extra one, you can order one here
You can put these items loose in your bin. Please don’t bag them.
Please wash and squash your recycling before you put it in the Big Bin so they don’t have bits of food left in them.
Take the lids off milk containers and bottles to make it easier to squash them down, and make the most of the space in your bin.
Please don’t put these items in your Big Bin:
- Garden waste (try composting)
- Rubble or building materials
- Light bulbs
- Broken glass
- Glass kitchenware (e.g. drinking glasses, pyrex, glass dishes)
- Small electrical items
