Types of Childcare

There are several types of childcare available within Bournemouth. These are childminders, day nurseries, pre-schools and out of school care.

Childminders are self-employed and provide childcare for children in their (the childminder's) own home. Parents should always verify that a childminder is Ofsted registered. Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills. A childminder will be happy to show you their latest inspection report and their registration certificate must be clearly displayed.

For further information, please see our choosing a childminder information sheet|

Day Nurseries

A day nursery provides care for babies and children up to five years old, for half or whole days, all year round. Day nurseries are registered and inspected by Ofsted to ensure that they are appropriately staffed and resourced and that premises are safe and suitable for children.

For further information, please see our choosing a day nursery information sheet|

Pre-schools are also known as playgroups or nursery schools. They offer a range of learning, play and social activities during term-time, for children between two and five years old. This sessional care is for periods, normally between two-and-a-half and four hours a day, mornings or afternooons.

Out-of-school care

Out-of-school clubs are for school-aged children to play and have fun. They are run outside of school hours and include breakfast clubs, after-school clubs, holiday clubs and play schemes. Activities are planned to support children's play, so they can have fun and relax with their friends. Some out-of-school clubs offer children the choice to do some educational activities, such as completing homework.
