Councillor Beryl Baxter has attended the IDeA's Leadership Academy
Background
The Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) states that "we expect a lot from out top councillors - to be everything from a financial whizz kid to an agony aunt".
In order to help Members achieve the best results for the communities they serve and to maximise their own personal development in the process, the IDeA has created the Leadership Academy.
The Leadership Academy is a place where leaders, and those in leadership positions, can learn the latest thinking in politicial leadership, increase knowledge and share best practice.
By discussing common issues with Member peers from other Council's and learning from experts in the field of leadership, graduates gain increased confidence in their abilities and build a network of trusted colleagues.
The Academy course is delivered over three two-day modules, with an optional fourth module if participants want to look at any of the issues in more depth. Each module considers a different aspect of leadership and is led by tutors who have a detailed knowledge of their subject.
The programme is delivered in a range of styles which are specifically aimed at Members; a maximum of 24 participants per course ensures a high level of participation and discussion, with case studies and practical exercises.
Module One: focusses on personal leadership. The aim of this module is to encourage councillors to look at what kind of leader they are, and how this affects the way they make decisions, delegate responsibility and empower colleagues
Module Two: looks at political leadership and is provided by Warwick Business School. Their experts deliver an interactive programme that explores the theoretical and practical aspects of strategic leadership
Module Three: explores community leadership and cohesion, and how Members can make the most of their relationships with community leaders to make sure the community is properly involved in Council plans. Again, the module is provided by Warwick Business School.
