The Corporate Equality and Diversity Policy| details our commitment to Equality and Diversity as a Council.
The Equality Act 2010| provides a new cross-cutting legislative framework to protect the rights of individuals and advance equality of opportunity for all; to update, simplify and strengthen the previous legislation; and to deliver a simple, modern and accessible framework of discrimination law which protects individuals from unfair treatment and promotes a fair and more equal society. Most of the provisions of the act came into force on the 1 October 2010 and the rest will be coming into force in the future. The New Public Sector Equality Duties| came into force on the 6 April 2011.

The Equality Framework for Local Government provides councils with a framework to help them improve fair treatment and equal access for everyone. It covers all areas the council works on and helps to improve the Council's role as a community leader, service provider and employer. Bournemouthis currently an Achieving authority under the Equality Framework for Local Government, we achieved this in 2009 and are currently working towards Excellence to enable us to mainstream equalities.
