Councillor Phil Stanley-Watts

Mayoral Year:  Friday, 25 May 2012 to Friday, 31 May 2013

Mayor's Biography

Councillor Stanley-Watts was born in London in 1959 but grew up and was educated in Bournemouth, studying Economics and History at the Bournemouth & Poole College. Whilst at school, he enjoyed attending Youth Athletic Courses and Youth Drama Courses, and he was a member of AFC Bournemouth’s Youth Team.

His career has seen him working at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, Rodway Smith Advertising, and for the Daily Echo (and its predecessors the Bournemouth Times and The Bugle). He was also a member of the Royal Naval Auxiliary Service. At present, he works at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

Councillor Stanley-Watts was elected onto Bournemouth Council in May 1991 and is a serving Member on the Dorset Fire Authority. He has held the position of Vice-Chairman of the Economy & Tourism Overview and Scrutiny Panel, and was a member of the Planning Board.  |, and was a member of the Planning Board. He has represented the Boscombe West Ward continuously since his election and has served on a number of Committees during the period from May 1991 to April 2002 including the Highways and Works, Housing, Environment, Community Services and Leisure &Tourism Services Committees.  He was Vice-Chairman of the Environment Committee from July 1997 to June 1998.

Phil has two young children – Jack and Katie – with his ex-wife Perry.

Councillor Stanley-Watts is a very keen athlete having represented Bournemouth, Dorset and England in athletics, Marathons and long-distance running. He also enjoys football, and has traveled Europe, America and Africa.

Mayor's Scout and Mayor's Guide

The Mayor has appointed Jack Saunders from the 5th Bournemouth Scout Group and Chelsie Little from the 33rdBournemouth Guides Unit as his Scout and Guide for the Mayoral Year.   

The Mayor's Scout and Guide accompany the Mayor at Civic Church Parades (including the Annual Civic Service on the Sunday after Mayor-Making), the Armed Forces Day Flag-Raising Ceremony in June, at the Remembrance Day Service at the Bournemouth War Memorial in November, and at other Church Services when requested. (They are often asked to participate in such events, eg reading a stated passage from the Bible, laying a wreath, etc.)

They also attend any special Civic function where it is felt the presence of the Mayor’s Scout and Guide would be appropriate, and accompany the Mayor at any other Mayoral Engagements when requested (eg Armed Forces Day Flag-Raising, Christmas Pantomime, Civic Walkabout, etc).

 

Mayor's Chaplain

The Mayor has appointed Reverand Dr Ian Terry, the Town’s Team Rector from St. Peter’s Church in the Town Centre, to act as his Chaplain during the Mayoral Year.

The main duties of the Mayor's Chaplain are to say prayers at the start of every Full Council Meeting, to participate in the Annual Civic Service on the first Sunday immediately after the Mayor-Making Ceremony/Annual Council, any attend any other function as requested by the Mayor.

 

Fundraising

The Mayor is supporting the following local charities during his Mayoral Year: 

  • The Jon Egging Trust This Trust, registered as a  Charity in July 2012, has a Charitable purpose to set up a Blue Skies Pilot Programme in Bournemouth to provide 10 selected young people with key Inspiration Days followed by a range of accredited work skills and leadership training opportunities.   
  • The Jigsaw Appeal for Women The Charity wishes to build a brand new Women’s Health Unit at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital to screen, diagnose and treat patients with breast and cervical cancer; for families touched by the tragedy of having a miscarriage; and to provide teaching and training.
  • The Bournemouth Leukaemia Fund which supports local research into the cause, diagnosis, natural history and treatment of patients;
  • The Springbourne Family Centre which supports vulnerable families in the Boscombe area by offering individual and group support to parents with children under five and to provide parenting groups, crèche, workshops, courses and child contact services at their friendly centre in Boscombe.

Mayoral History

A limited edition book (1,000 copies) on the Past Mayors of Bournemouth has been produced, entitled "The Lives & Times of The Mayors of Bournemouth 1890 - 2000".

The book is an A4 paperback and sells for £7.00 per copy.  Postage & packing will be charged at an additional £3.50 for 2nd Class post or £4.00 for 1st Class Post.
