21 May 2009 - Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole Researchers' Network

This seminar was open to all who are working in, or have an interest in research topics. The seminar included presentations on the Place Survey; a sectorial analysis of industry sectors in Dorset; the Dorset Lifestyle Survey commissioned by NHS Dorset; and a customer satisfaction technique used by the Borough of Poole.

22 October 2008 - Public Opinion

This seminar included a presentation from DCLG about the Place Survey – a new biennial survey to replace the Best Value surveys starting this autumn. We also heard about Dorset Police’s survey techniques, patient and public involvement research undertaken by Bournemouth and Poole PCT and the Borough of Poole’s consultation database. ONS provided some guidance on public involvement surveys and were on hand to answer queries about design and sampling.

2nd July 2008 - Housing Seminar

This seminar brought together housing and planning professionals together with representatives from education and the voluntary sector.  Presentations were given on the derivation of the regional strategy housing figures (Keith Woodhead – SWRA); the strategic housing market assessments for Dorset (Gill Smith – GMS Consulting/Dorset County Council); Poole new places survey – (Kat Watters – Borough of Poole); strategic housing land availability assessments (Steve Garrett – Bournemouth Borough Council; and Charlotte Abbott – Home Builders Federation); and the current housing market (Alan Cosgrove – Alan Cosgrove Estates).

20th May 2008 - Research Community event

The event provided an opportunity to learn about the structure and work of the research and information teams from the two PCTs and 3 Local Authorities.  The day highlighted that whilst there are differences in the set up and location of the departments within there respective organisations, there is also a lot of commonality, joint working and shared issues. 7th March 2008 - SW Observatory Roadshow

Many of us need to collate data to report on targets and indicators and local information systems have been developed to help. The roadshow provided information about local information systems research and the work of Bournemouth, Dorset and Pooles' own local intelligence network - EBase and the South West Observatory Network and how they aim to support local researchers and data managers.  View the presentations

 

28th February 2008 - Update on Population

Population statistics are essential for those wishing to understand their locality.  This seminar brought together practitioners from both public sector organisations and voluntary groups to hear presentations on mid-year estimates, vital statistics, improving small area population estimates and population projections.  The speakers explained different aspects of population estimates and projections including methodologies, components (in particular births and deaths) and trends over time.  View the presentations

 

29th November 2007 - Inequalities: Health, Wealth and Isolation

Inequalities cover a wide range of issues from income to health to fuel.  This seminar brought together practioners from the local authorities, the local health providers and voluntary groups to hear presentations poverty and wealth, the geography of poverty, the work of the CAB, health inequalities and fuel poverty.  The speakers were able to relate the individual aspects of poverty to show that very often someone who is affected by health issues is also likely to be using the services of the CAB or to be living in a cold house.  View the presentations and other information.*

 

7th June 2007 - Neighbourhood Profiling:  Tips, Tools and examples

Neighbourhood profiles aim to supply information on a wide range of topics about a local area. They aim to assist the local community with meeting their information needs to identify issues of concern, secure funding for local projects, for comparison with neighbouring areas and for general interest.
A large number have already been produced (over 700 across the South West) and the continued need for understanding our local areas means many more are in production. 
The purpose of this seminar was to share available research, highlight initiatives and policy implications, identify actions and issues for the future and as a networking opportunity for those with an interest in this.

5th December 2006 - From Data to Meaningful Information

This seminar reflects on:
Some of the problems faced by practitioners in making sense of and using data and information, in addition to showcasing some of the innovative tools available in the Sub-region. 

Discussion on how these tools have been used to assist in making sense of data and it’s presentation.
Identify examples that connect research and practice.

21st November 2006 - Migrant Worker Presentation

The event aimed to answer questions raised about the number of migrant workers in the sub-region, where they are from and what they are doing. In addition, the seminar presented information about activity being undertaken to support migrant workers.  View the presentations*.
