ABOUT PARENT LINK (PARENT PARTNERSHIP)

Bournemouth Parent Partnership Scheme (Parent Link) was established in September 1999. Parent Link is an independent scheme that provides information, guidance and support to parents and carers of children with special educational needs. As the scheme has developed it has begun to take on a broader role seeking to explore models of good practice in working with parents of children with SEN and other groups of parents.

AIMS OF THE PARENT PARTNERSHIP SCHEME

The Parent Partnership scheme aims to support the parents/carers of local pupils by:

  • providing information appropriate to their needs
  • helping to achieve, through the provision of training for parents and schools, helpful two-way communication
  • developing practical, positive and independent support services for parents

THE PARENT SUPPORT PROGRAMME

Parent Link run the support programme in partnership with local schools as well as through an extensive workshop programme. The aims of the parent support programme are:

  • to meet the support needs of parents and in particular to provide parents with the opportunity to experience being "heard"
  • to enable the needs of each child to be met more effectively
  • to develop communication skills to enable parents to communicate more effectively with professionals about their needs and views
  • to enable parents to identify their information needs and to gain access to information even if barriers are encountered
  • to help parents recognise choices so that they can make an informed decision about what is right for them and to have the skills to present their choice
  • to reduce conflict between parents and professionals
  • to reduce parents’ feelings of isolation
  • to help parents develop a support network with each other

Further information and a leaflet can be obtained by contacting Annette Harwood on 01202 451970.
