How can I arrange a collection for large bulky goods?

Bournemouth Borough Council offers residents a collection service for bulky household waste, such as unwanted furniture and electrical appliances.

You can arrange a collection by contacting the Authority's Support Services Contractor - Watson Contract Cleaning Services, Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm on 01202 559918 or via http://www.cleaningservicesbournemouth.co.uk/bulky-goods-removal|

You will be asked to provide your name, address and telephone number and also to give a description of the items you would like us to collect. If you are elderly, infirm or disabled and need assistance please mention this when you ring us.

The advisor you speak to will confirm that we are able to take the items and will give you a collection date within two working days of your call.

 

What can be collect?

Among the bulky items accepted are:

  • Fridges/freezers
  • Washing machines
  • Beds/mattresses
  • Sofas/armchairs
  • Tables/chairs
  • Televisions

Is there a charge for this service?

Yes there is a charge for this service which is a minimum charge of £36.00 including VAT.

All items must be placed at the boundary of the property on the day of collection.

 

How else can I dispose of bulky household goods?

If you are a Bournemouth resident you can also take it free of charge to Millhams Household Recycling Centre|.

 

Other useful options -

Other available options for disposing of bulky household goods include:

  • Dorset Reclaim - A charity which provides furniture and household items to those in the community who need it most. If you have good quality furniture, electrical or household items which you no longer need then please contact Dorset Reclaim on 01202 773384.
  • Charity Shops - Donate any good quality furniture to charity shops and give it a second chance. Furniture is accepted by the British Heart Foundation, Winton. Call 01202 521673 to arrange free collection. Another option is Lewis-Manning Hospice.  Call 01202 684040 for details.
  • Freecycle - Freecycle groups match people who have things they want to get rid of with people who can use them, keeping usable items out of landfills. Membership is free and everything is exchanged for free. 
  • ebay - With money being tight, if it’s worth something then why not make some money from it. Put it on ebay and let the auction commence.
  • recycle.co.uk is a free service that allows members to list unwanted items for charities to claim if they wish to do so. After 48 hours the listing becomes available to the general public if it is no use to the charity partners.
  • skipandbin.com is a skip hire price comparison directory. (A bit like confused.com but for skips!). A free, impartial service for consumers looking for a good deal on local skip hire. Customers get to deal with the licensed skip companies directly. Much of this waste can be recycled or in the case of items such as fridges which contain potentially hazardous materials, disposed of in a safe and environmentally friendly way.
