Stop Press

Due to the open-top bus parade to celebrate AFC Bournemouth's promotion to the Championship this Sunday, Kings Park Green Waste Collection Point may be disrupted. We apologies for any inconvenience caused. The service will resume as normal on Sunday 5th May.

 Free Compost

This year's Compost Giveaway is happening at Kings Park Green Waste Collection Point on Sunday 19 May from 9am. See below for more details.

Does the council operate a Green Waste Scheme?

Yes, Bournemouth Borough Council operates an 'opt in' Green Waste Scheme. The 2013 scheme will run from April 8 - November 29. Also green waste can be taken to Kings Park Green Waste Bring Site (accessed from Holdenhurst Road) on Sundays from April-November between 9am-1pm.

How does the scheme work?

For those who joined the waiting list before 24 December 2012, you should have receivde a letter in late January/early February to let you know you are being included in the 2013 scheme. Existing users of the scheme are automatically included unless you actively choose to opt out.

We are currently delivering calendars and bins to all customers new to the 2013 scheme in time for the start of the new scheme on April 8.

How do I register for the green waste scheme?

You can register your interest in the scheme for 2014 by phoning Customer Services on 01202 451199 or by emailing the Recycling team|.

Please note - Anyone who is already on the scheme does not need to re-register.

How do I know if I have been successfully registered on the scheme?

You will be notified by letter in late January/early February 2013 stating whether or not you've been successful. Expansion of the scheme is dependent on resources available.

What can I do with my green waste if I'm not on the scheme?

In the meantime if residents have any additional green waste to get rid of you can take it to Millhams Community Recycling Centre| for composting.

We also operate a weekly bring site during the green waste collection season (April-November) at Kings Park Lorry Park (access via Holdenhurst Road entrance), where residents can bring their green waste and it will be taken away to be composted. The weekly collection point operates every Sunday between April and November from 9am to 1pm. Please bring some proof of residency with you when you attend. Please note the bring site will not operate during Air Festival weekend, Sunday 1st September 2013, as the site is used as a Park and Ride.

Alternatively you can now order a home composter online at a discounted price from the Dorset Reduction and Recycling Group| or by phone on 0844 571 4444.

How do I find out when I can join the scheme?

You will need to call us and let us know that you are interested in joining the scheme. We will then write to you to confirm whether the scheme is being extended to allow you to join. This extension is subject to the necessary funding becoming available.

I haven’t received my bin, when can I expect to receive my container?

Your wheelie bin will be delivered to you before the scheme starts in April. If you believe you have been missed please call Customer Services on 01202 451199 or email the Recycling Team|.

How do I report that my bin has been missed, what should I do?

If your container is missed please contact us the following day by telephoning Customer Services on 01202 451199 or e-mail the Recycling Team|. It is our policy not to return for missed bins. Please ensure your container is out on the pavement at 5.00am and clearly visible to crews on collection day.

My bin has been stolen, what should I do?

We recommend households number their bins to avoid any confusion.

Unfortunately, we are unable to replace lost or stolen green waste containers free of charge. The initial cost of providing the bin was incurred by the Council; however there is not sufficient funding to provide a replacement bin. The replacement bin charge is £38 plus a £10 delivery charge. You can avoid the delivery charge and collect the bin in person from Southcote Road Depot but 24 hours notice is needed so please make your intentions known when ordering and paying for your replacement via Customer Services on 01202 451199.

What if my green waste bin hasn't been emptied and has the wrong type of waste in it?

The Council has strict guidelines on what can and cannot be collected in the green waste containers. A list of acceptable and unacceptable materials is provided with the collection calendar. Unfortunately if the bin has contaminating items in it, the Council will not be able to collect the container with other green waste. Please contact either Customer Services on 01202 451199 or email the Recycling team| if you have any questions regarding green waste contamination.

A small bin isn’t big enough, can I have a bigger bin?

Unfortunately, it is Council policy to issue one small 140-litre bin for the collection for green waste. Any excess can be composted at home or taken to Millhams Community Recycling Centre or Kings Park green waste bring site on Sundays from April- November between 9am-1pm.

Will you be running the compost giveaway again this year?

For one day only free compost is up for grabs to all residents in Bournemouth. We have seven tonnes of compost available for residents on a first come first served basis as a thank you for their efforts in recycling their garden waste.

The compost donated by Bournemouth's waste partner Eco Sustainable Solutions, will be available to residents at Kings Park Green Waste Collection Point on Sunday 19 May from 9am. But be quick as in previous years it has gone quickly.

Residents are asked to bring a Council Tax statement to confirm residency and their own containers totalling no more than 70 litres for collecting the compost.
