Staying safe when visiting Millhams

Following the recent incident involving an explosion at Millhams Community Recycling Centre, Bournemouth Council are reviewing safety practices at the site for residents and staff.

Residents can help improve site safety by following a few steps.

  • Please remember Millhams is a working site with commercial vehicles moving around the site. Visitors to the site should be aware of vehicles and remain in the designated pedestrian areas.
  • Residents are asked to keep black bagged rubbish to a minimum as this waste will go to landfill and are instead encouraged to separate waste into material type i.e. wood, garden waste, metal, textile etc. Separating materials at home may help speed up drop-off once on site. Site staff will also be required to sort less unknown waste, reducing their exposure risk.
  • Visitors to the site should follow safety guidance given by signs and site staff. Children and pets must remain in the vehicle at all times. Site staff will be happy to answer any questions or queries that you may have.

Millhams Residential Permit Scheme

Please note that vans, trucks, lorries or any other vehicle which are not a domestic/family car will not be allowed entry into Millhams. However a residential permit scheme operates for those residents who have a van as their only mode of transport to dispose of household waste. To be eligible to apply for a permit, you must be able to meet the following criteria:

  • The vehicle is your only means of transport – DVLA checks may be carried out
  • The vehicle must be registered to a Bournemouth residential address and not to a business
  • The vehicle should only be insured for social, domestic and pleasure purposes
  • The vehicle must have a valid MOT certificate
  • The vehicle must be registered, insured and taxed as a domestic vehicle, for domestic use only
  • You must be able to provide the MOT, Form V5 and current insurance certificate
