A fresh approach is being taken to bring forward improvements at the Waterfront site.
The Council invited leisure operators and developers to put forward proposals for a leisure attraction on the Waterfront site. Unfortunately, none of the bids sufficiently fitted with our aspirations or achieved an acceptable balance between leisure attractions and commercial uses, based on the results of the public consultation in March 2010.
The Council is not prepared to compromise on the future of the Waterfront site. We know how much people dislike the current building; they want better views and expect good quality development which enhances their town centre and seafront.
Therefore, the Bournemouth Development Company, a public-private partnership between the Council and Morgan Sindall Investments Ltd, is considering the feasibility of stepping up to develop the site sooner than it had originally intended.
In the meantime, whilst we wait for a suitable leisure proposal for the site, the Council has decided to demolish the building in order to restore the sea views, and create an outdoor public space which can be used to host events at key times throughout the year.
