Bournemouth Borough Council has approved its criteria for residential roads to become a Home Zone. Home Zones are streets where people and vehicles share the road equally. They are not only to calm traffic but also encourage regeneration, improve the environment and encourage walking, cycling and shared community spaces.
A Home Zone could include using grass, trees and play areas to divide the road into sections. It may include removing pavements and kerbs which create boundaries between where pedestrians can walk and where traffic has control, by removing them the road becomes an area for everyone. The local community will have essential input into a Home Zone and their involvement will aid the objectives of any scheme that may be going ahead.
Councillor John Hayter, Cabinet Member For Sustaining our Environment says, “The Home Zone will create an area for residents to feel safe. By utilising different ideas we can create spaces for cars to travel slowly and for communities to mix and enjoy the area around their house. The new assessment criteria will help us to decide which street s are viable for this option.”
For a street to become a Home Zone the ranking criteria will have to show a score of over 50% for the street to be considered for the scheme. The criteria includes environmental issues, community groups already established, social deprivation, traffic flow, parking issues and safer routes to school initiatives amongst others to meet the 16 core criteria.
