PRESS RELEASE- 21 May 2009
School children across Bournemouth and Poole will see a bus with a difference pull up at the school gates this week as the Big Green Bus takes to the road.
As part of the Big Green Fortnight Brigit Strawbridge, celebrity environmental campaigner, will be visiting Bournemouth and Poole schools to teach children how greener living can be fun and exciting. From learning how the sun can power a buzzing loop-and-wire game, to making their own banana smoothies using a pedal-powered smoothie maker, children will explore allsorts of ways to live and play in a greener way.
Ian Selby, Sustainable Travel Officer, Bournemouth Borough Council said; “When we heard the Big Green Bus was going to be in town we saw a perfect opportunity to bring the bus to schools during National Walk to School Week. For parents and children alike traveling to school can be very hectic, with the so called ‘school run’ single-handedly emitting an enormous amount of CO2 into the atmosphere. In order to go green in your daily journey to and from school there are other options such as walking, cycling, catching the bus, or even car sharing. I am delighted the Big Green Bus is visiting schools and the children are able to learn new and exciting ways to save energy. Children are very enthusiastic when it comes to saving the planet and I am sure they will thoroughly enjoy looking inside the bus and seeing what Brigit and her team can teach them.”
The Big Green Bus used to be a Bournemouth Yellow Bus but then joined the environmental charity ‘The Big Green Idea’. It now runs on bio-diesel or waste vegetable oil and is a fun showcase for sustainable living. Brigit and the Big Green Bus are currently touring Bournemouth and Poole Schools as part of National Walk to School Week (18-23 May).
