We are committed to ensuring that vital public services are kept running as normal during the winter across Bournemouth. The pages above and information below provide guidance as to how these services are run during sustained periods of severe winter weather.
Libraries
Those unable to get to local libraries during any adverse weather conditions can renew their books online at www.bournemouth.gov.uk/libraries|. Residents can also contact any of our 12 local libraries to renew books over the phone, contact details can be found on our Libraries section|.
Roads
A team of five gritters are ready to go with 1800 tonnes of road salt and will be working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to keep the traffic moving when weather conditions dictate.
We will be putting out 'Gritter alerts' on its “Gritter Twitter” page to let the public know of planned gritting operations at http://twitter.com/bournemouthbc|. Gritting alerts will also be broadcast on local radio stations as and when the gritters come out.
Stuart Best, Street Services Manager talks about the Council’s work to grit Bournemouth’s main routes.
Adult Social Care Services
Our Home Care and Reablement Services, providing care and support to people living in their homes, ensure that people continue to be visited during adverse winter weather. In extreme conditions, there may be a short delay before staff arrive at service users’ homes due to longer travelling times. If this happens, we contact people to let them know the latest situation and staff check on their well-being.
In exceptional circumstances, our day centres may close for a short period. If this happens, we contact service users to check they have the warmth, food and support they need in their homes. If necessary, we arrange services to ensure their well-being such as the delivery of a hot meal.
Local Primary and secondary schools
All local primary and secondary schools will inform parents of any school closures through early morning local radio broadcasts on Heart FM and Wave 105 FM. For local school contact details take a look at our 'My Local School' page|.
All primary and secondary schools closures along with any other disruptions to council services due to winter weather will be listed on our home page|.This page will be constantly updated as and when disruptions occur so please keep checking it for the latest local information.
Recycling and Waste collection arrangements
For more information about the arrangements please take a look at our latest news section| for updates should we experience any severe weather.
