Bournemouth has twenty Conservation Areas which are listed below along with the year they were originally designated.
To find out if your property is in a Conservation Area, please use the My Property| page.
At the present time there are no future plans or unimplemented resolutions to designate any further areas as Conservation Areas within the Borough.
This table sets out all the existing conservation areas and the progress made towards preparation of Conservation Area Appraisals. It will be updated as further work is completed. Both Conservation Area Appraisals and Character Studies are a material consideration in the determination of planning applications. More information about Conservation Area Appraisals and Character Studies can be found below the table.

Conservation Area Appraisals:
Conservation Area Appraisals are more in depth than Character Studies. Their purpose is to identify the key elements which contribute to the significance of a conservation area which warranted its designation. Appraisals adopted before 2011 follow the format suggested by English Heritage in ‘Guidance on Conservation Area Appraisals’ (2006). Appraisals adopted after 2011 follow the English Heritage guidance 'Understanding Place: Conservation Area Designation, Appraisal and Management' (2011). It is intended to produce Conservation Area Appraisals for all of Bournemouth’s conservation areas.
The character studies were produced in 1999 and include a character analysis of the conservation area. They provide a useful starting point in understanding the historic nature and importance of these areas. They do not however, in places, reflect the latest policies and guidance, and change may have occurred within the area since their original publication. In due course the character studies will be updated with Conservation Area Appraisals.
