One of the most important responsibilities of the Planning Policy team is the production of the Council's policy for future developments in the town. In simple terms, it gives people an idea of the types of development that will and will not be permitted, and where development is likely to take place. It tackles a wide range of issues such as housing, transport, the economy, conservation and recreation and leisure.
Bournemouth, as a Unitary Authority has strategic planning responsibilities. This involves working with neighbouring strategic authorities (Dorset County Council and Borough of Poole), local District Authorities and the South West Regional Assembly. Strategic Planning involves developing long term policies covering a large area on a wide range of land use issues such as housing, transport, the economy, conservation and recreation and leisure.
Bournemouth Borough Council's Planning Board determines all applications for minerals and waste disposal development in the Borough, and also exercises the strategic minerals and waste disposal function within the area. However, under an agreement, Bournemouth Council is advised on strategic minerals and waste planning matters by officers of Dorset County Council.
Planning Policy consultations, both current and closed, can be tracked on the consultations page.
