Safer Communities
Welcome to the Safer Communities page

Safer Communities is a wide and varied field that deals with tackling crime, drugs and disorder in the Borough.  In Bournemouth, the Safer Communities agenda is delivered by a range of agencies who work together to form the Safer & Stronger Communities Forum.  Through this Forum, a 3-year Delivery Plan (please click here for full version and summarised version) is developed after the production of a Strategic Assessment that includes public consultation.

In 2007 - 2010 the Safer & Stronger Communities Forum will be delivering on the Safer & Stronger Communities block within Bournemouth's Local Area Agreement.

The Forum works closely with the Drug & Alcohol Action Team which is responsible for delivering the National Drugs Strategy across Bournemouth - aims include addressing Communities, Supply, Treatment and Young People.

In Bournemouth, the particular concerns regarding crime, drugs and disorder are:

  • Alcohol fuelled violence
  • Reducing harm from alcohol
  • Domestic abuse
  • Organised violence amongst young people
  • Prejudice and discrimination
  • Prolific and priority offenders
  • Substance misuse

These priorities are delivered through multi-agency groups which address the areas of concern:

There are also some police led multi-agency groups that focus on localities.

Alcohol Harm Reduction Group                                                 Top

Arson Reduction Group                                                          Top

This group will be effective over the longer term by tackling the underlying causes of arson through coordinating local efforts to reduce deliberate fires, evaluating schemes, providing best practice and making communities aware of arson issues.

Bournemouth & Poole Strategic Domestic Abuse Group         Top

This is a multi-agency strategic group aimed at tackling domestic abuse issues (also known as domestic violence) concerning both victims and perpetrators. The group is made up of strategic managers from the statuary and voluntary sectors and covers issues like training, reporting standings and services for victims.

Prejudice Free Bournemouth and Poole Group                       Top

The goal is to achieve a peaceful and harmonious town- one where difference is treated with respect and celebrated.

Prolific and Other Priority Offenders Strategy                           Top

The Prolific and Other Priority Offenders Strategy (PPO) came into effect in September 2004 with the aim of targeting and tackling the most prolific offenders who cause a disproportionate amount of harm to their local community. It is a multi-agency partnership led by the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP) and based on a very close working relationship between the Police, Probation Service, Prison, Health, drug treatment agencies, Housing and Local Authority Community Safety to identify, monitor and intensively manage a key target group of offenders in the local area. Once an individual is identified, schemes are expected to manage offenders through a combination of enforcement measures and incentives to change behaviour.

Safer Bournemouth Group                                                        Top

The Safer Bournemouth CSAG (Community Safety Action Group) is a partnership group that has been in existence for a number of years. It previously focused solely upon the nighttime economy and in particular acts of alcohol fuelled violence and anti-social behaviour in and around Bournemouth Town Centre. However the group has recently decided to extend its area of interest to now include the entire Borough of Bournemouth and to review and redefine its strategic aims and objectives. Violent crime still represents almost a quarter of all crime recorded in the Bournemouth Division and as such it continues to represent a significant challenge to all partner agencies, statutory or otherwise.
