Council Tax Benefit

Council Tax Benefit is a national welfare benefit administered by Local Authorities. Its purpose is to provide help to people receiving state benefits or on low incomes pay their Council Tax Bill.

Depending on income and personal/family circumstances, you can claim up to 100% off your Council Tax Bill. If awarded, Council Tax Benefit is deducted from your Council Tax liability, reducing your bill.

To apply for Council Tax Benefit the claimant must be liable for the Council Tax charge in respect of a dwelling and a resident of that dwelling. Non-resident owners are not eligible.

People under the age of 18, tenants in 'houses in multiple occupation ' (i.e. bedsits) and most full-time students are also not eligible to claim Council Tax Benefit.
