Paying Back an Overpayment

If you have been overpaid benefit there are several ways which the debt can be recovered/paid back:

  • If you are still receiving Housing Benefit, we may reduce this each week by the instalment amount shown on your letter.
  • If you feel that the amount we are reducing your Housing Benefit by is causing you hardship, you can write and ask us to lower it. Please note: we may ask for more details.
  • If you stop receiving Housing Benefit, we may send you an invoice.
  • If your landlord was paid your benefit directly, we may ask your landlord to repay us in certain circumstances.
  • If you have been overpaid Council Tax Benefit, we will send you a new Council Tax bill, which will include any money you have been overpaid. You will need to contact the Council Tax Section regards payment of this.

IMPORTANT: Should you be unable to pay an invoice in full, please contact The Overpayment Team at Revenue & Benefits Services on 01202 451594 where alternative arrangements for payment can be agreed. Remember to quote your Invoice Reference.

 

If your address has changed (or changes) from that held on our records for communications, please notify Revenue & Benefits Services as soon as possible.
