Discounts & Exemptions

Each Council Tax bill generally assumes that there are at least two adults resident in a property. Where there are less than two, you can claim a discount.

Where only one adult is resident the bill will be reduced by a discount of 25%. This is known as Single Person Discount.

The discount for properties not occupied as anyone's sole or main residence is:

Long Term empty properties (unfurnished) Discount 0%

Properties not used as anyone's main residence (furnished) Discount 10%

Beach Chalets at Mudeford Sandspit Discount 50%

Where two or more adults live in a dwelling and all but one are disregarded a 25% reduction would apply. This is known as a Status Discount.

For more detailed information about the discounts and exemptions available to Council Tax payers, please click on the links on the left hand side of this page.

Change in Circumstances

If your bill shows that a discount or exemption has been awarded you must tell the Council of any change of circumstances that may affect your entitlement within 21 days of the change - if you don't you may risk a £50 penalty as well as a back-dated bill.

You can advise a change of circumstances by printing out then completing and posting this form Change of Circumstances Form
