The majority of Council duties are relevant to Local Agenda 21 and some UK local authorities, Bournemouth among them, had recognised the need to act on environmental and sustainable development issues prior to the 1992 Earth Summit. In 1990 this Council set up the Corporate Environmental Strategy Working Group to guide policy, set targets and monitor progress. With the emergence of Agenda 21, Bournemouth (along with the majority of UK local authorities) rose to the challenge it presented. Sustainable development goals were addressed under the umbrella of Bournemouth Agenda 21 and delivered through the Council's major strategies: Environmental, Community and Economic Development. Each of these contained detailed information on projects and partner organisations involved. In 2000, the Bournemouth Partnership published the Bournemouth Community Plan and this became the town’s Local Agenda 21 sustainable development strategy. The Bournemouth Partnership is now known as Bournemouth 2026 and the latest sustainable community strategy was published in 2007.
