Bournemouth Coastal Management Framework

The Coastal Management Framework has been created to enable people to understand the many aspects of flood and coastal management implemented by the Council under European and Central Government Departmental and Agency policies.

The Government supports the Council’s approved coast protection expenditure programme with Grant-Aid under the Coast Protection Act, 1949 and Supplementary Credit Approval (permitting capital loans to be raised). The Government also contributes towards the revenue costs of coast protection works/maintenance through the Revenue Support Grant.

For coast protection schemes, the Council consults 30 organisations twice:

  1. An informal consultation with the Council’s outline proposals for comment.
  2. The formal consultation that includes the scheme details (modified using the results of the informal consultation).

Some Statutory consultees can require extensive preliminary investigative work by specialists in order to satisfy their particular concerns or before they issue consents or licences.

The framework deals with the present management structure and how the relationships have been built and developed Nationally and Regionally, especially as the sea and natural coastal processes do not recognise local authority administrative boundaries.
