First you need a Bournemouth Libraries library card. Visit your local library and either become a member of the library (see Joining the Library) or ask staff for a PC User library card. Staff will also give you a PIN (Personal Identification Number).
All users of Bournemouth Libraries computers are asked to abide by our Computer Conditions of Use when they log on to a computer. (opens as a PDF in a new window).
Most libraries have some computers which can only be used and booked by children (aged 2 to 12 years old) or teen (aded 13 to 17 years old) library card holders because they are in the children’s or teen’s area of the library. Bournemouth, Strouden and West Howe libraries also have ‘Early Years’ computers, with an easy-to-use keyboard and trackball mouse, suitable for very young children.
Parents/carers of under 16 year olds take responsibility for their children when they are using Bournemouth Libraries computers and must sign a Parental Consent Form (opens as a PDF in a new window).
Website blocking
Websites of an unlawful, obscene or menacing nature are blocked through Websense. From within libraries you will also be unable to access gambling websites and most advertisements. We also block Instant Messaging, Web Chat and Peer-to-Peer file sharing and we limit streaming media (TV, radio, video etc.) and Internet telephony in order to keep our systems secure and functioning as speedily as possible.
If you discover that you can view a website that you consider should be blocked please report it to a member of library staff.
If you find that a legitimate website is being blocked please ask a member of library staff to request that it be unblocked.
We have a variety of Adaptive Technology available in all libraries. Please ask staff for large keyboards, trackballs and help with software for people with visual impairments or learning disabilities.
Some of the computers can be used without the need to make a booking. Look for notices or ask library staff for help with finding these. Others require you to pre-book (see next section). When one is free, or when a computer you’ve pre-booked is ready for you, press Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Log On screen and then follow the on-screen instructions, entering your library card number (without the letter on the end) and PIN when asked.
Please wait patiently until the desktop has completely finished loading before trying to open any programmes. Wait until all desktop icons display properly and no timer appears next to the cursor when you move the mouse. This can take up to a couple of minutes and clicking on icons repeatedly only slows the process down. Click once and then wait.
Please do not try to alter any of the computer's settings.
You can use Bournemouth Libraries computers for up to one hour each day. This could be all at one time, on one computer or at different times on different computers.
Some ‘non-bookable’ computers can only be used for fifteen minutes before you’re automatically logged off (these are called our ‘Fast Track’ PCs). ‘Fast Track’ PCs are good for quickly checking your emails and you shouldn’t have to wait too long to be able to use one.
A time counter on the bottom right of the screen will tell you how much time you have remaining and a warning messages will appear when you only have a ten minutes and then one minute left to enable you to finish and save your work if you want to.
All computer users will automatically be logged off ten minutes before the library closes.
