Bournemouth Library Music Zone - A Snapshot History

The Music Library in Bournemouth was founded as the result of the gift of a large collection of printed music and books about music which the Rev. John B M Camm gave to the town in 1913.  Camm had retired to the town in 1888 and was a great supporter of the fledgling Municipal Orchestra and its conductor, Dan Godfrey.  His collection was housed in a specially created room on the top floor of the Central Library at the Lansdowne which opened in March 1913.  It was one of the first public music libraries in the country with open access.  A collection of recordings was added in 1978, based on a library of long-playing records given by Michael Read, a local music-lover.  This was eventually superceded by the present CD library, which includes a rich jazz collection, the bequest of Gordon Turner.  The Music Library moved to the Bournemouth Library at the Triangle in April 2002.
