One of the most important responsibilities of the Planning Policy team is the production of the Council's policy for future developments in the town. In simple terms, it gives people an idea of the types of development that will and will not be permitted, and where development is likely to take place. It tackles a wide range of land-use issues such as housing, transport, the economy, conservation and recreation and leisure.
The document setting out the Council's planning policy is the Bournemouth District Wide Local Plan. This plan was adopted on 26th February 2002 and sets out planning policy up to 2011.
The District Wide Local Plan document is available from Planning and Transport, priced £25.00 (postage and packing is an additional £3.00). A CD version of the District Wide Local Plan is also now available, priced at £25.00 (postage and packing is an additional £1.00).
An online version can be viewed here (this will open in a new window). The Local Plan can be accessed by clicking on the front page.
The adopted Bournemouth District Wide Local Plan forms part of the development plan covering the Borough. The development plan comprises:
Local Development Framework
The Bournemouth District Wide Local Plan will eventually be replaced by the Local Development Framework (LDF) as set out in the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004.
The LDF will consist of a series of planning policy documents (Local Development Documents). The Council has prepared a Local Development Scheme (LDS), which sets out the timetable for preparation of the Local Development Documents over a rolling 3 year period. It will be updated annually. The Local Development Scheme also includes the Minerals and Waste Development Scheme which has been prepared by Dorset County Council on behalf of Bournemouth Borough Council and covers Bournemouth and Poole as well as the rest of Dorset.
Work has been ongoing on the preparation of a Statement of Community Involvement (SCI) which sets out how the Council will engage with the community and allow for participation in the new system.
A proposed document has now been formally submitted to the Secretary of State and has been subject to a 6-week period of public participation which concluded on 11th May 2006.
