Quality of Life Indicators Report 2002

Whilst the Bournemouth Community Plan contains targets to be achieved over a five year period, the priority areas it addresses require our longer-term attention. The stated aim of the Plan is to bring about the sustainable development of Bournemouth – enabling us to have a good quality of life now, whilst protecting the environment and conserving resources for future generations. By doing this for Bournemouth we are also contributing to global well-being by taking actions which will positively affect climate change and other important issues. But how can we measure the effects of our efforts to improve quality of life?

“Indicators” are particular statistics used to measure, simplify and communicate changes in important issues. They help us understand the role we all have to play in improving quality of life. These “Quality of Life Indicators” can help inform us all as we try to balance social, economic and environmental priorities to bring about sustainable development.

During 2000/2001, the people of Bournemouth were consulted on possible Quality of Life Indicators for the town. Many of the most popular are the same, or very similar, to the National Indicators of Sustainable Development. Viewed together, the indicators provide a broad overview of progress towards sustainable development in Bournemouth.

The consultation identified certain indicators which the public saw as being most important in showing if our quality of life was improving. These ten “headline” indicators are included in this document.
