The number and characteristics of new dwellings constructed in Bournemouth is monitored on an annual basis to ensure that planning policies are enabling the development of adequate new housing to meet the needs of the population.
The Bournemouth, Dorset & Poole Structure Plan sets out a figure for the level of housing provision that should be made across Dorset during the period of the plan (1994-2011) based on the forecast growth in population. Progress against this figure is monitored by each local authority in the county. The results of the annual survey are also supplied to central & regional government to contribute to national & regional data on housing stock.
During each financial year the permissions granted for residential development are logged in a database. On 31 March officers survey all the sites with current planning permission to assess the stage of implementation of the permission. The number of residential units completed, under construction and unimplemented are then calculated.
