Health, Social and welfare

This section looks at data relating to areas of health, social and welfare . Please use the menu links on the left hand side to access this data.

This section covers a wide array of statistics including statistics on numbers of benefit recipients, numbers of out-patients and in-patients at Bournemouth hospital and households by tenure type.  The statistics in this section help provide an insight into the health and welfare needs of Bournemouth residents.

The benefit data illustrates benefit uptake by type.  The most recent statistics are available at super output area lower layer (SOALL).  The data has been mapped to illustrate areas of high and low take-up of a particular benefit.  For example, Attendance Allowance is paid to people over 65 who are severely physically or mentally disabled and as a result require help with personal care or supervision.  In 2007 in England the proportion of 65 year olds in receipt of this benefit was 19%.  In Bournemouth take-up by LSOA varied between 10.5% and 34%.  This information can be combined with other statistics to get a better picture of particular needs across the Borough.  Attendance Allowance is a benefit available to all who require it regardless of income so can be used as an indicator of areas with particular health needs among the elderly.  It is helpful to use it in conjunction with other statistics as areas with lower take-up rates don't necessarily have healthier pensioners; they may just not be aware of the financial help available.

This section also includes a link to the latest Public Health Report produced jointly by the Bournemouth Partnership which includes the Borough Council and the Primary Care Trust.  This includes details on the policies to improve health and also a profile of the Borough.  Hospital statistics from the Royal Bournemouth Hospital provide information on the numbers treated locally as both outpatients and inpatients.

The Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) ranks super output area lower layer across England in terms of deprivation.  The results for Bournemouth have been mapped and include explanatory data.
