Finance, Government & Public Sector

This section looks at data relating to finance and other data regarding the government and public sector.  Click on the links on the left to access information on the Council’s and Dorset Police’s financial data and details of the council tax and business rates.

Bournemouth Borough Council has a net expenditure of almost £177 million.  The largest areas of spending are education (£78.2 million) and social services (£51.8 million).  In terms of capital spending (spending on infrastructure and buildings) in 2005/06 the Council expected to spend £61.7 million, including £14.7 million on coast protection and £12 million on the BIC.

The Council raises money through the Council Tax which is applicable to all properties in the borough.  When the Council Tax was introduced in the mid 1990’s every property was allocated to a band and so the Council tax paid depends on which band a property sits.  In 2006/07, the amount paid ranged from £714.03 from Band A* properties, the very smallest, to £2,570.52 for the very largest.

Business rates are the way in which businesses and other occupiers of non-domestic property contribute towards the costs of local authority services.  The rateable value of all business properties appears in rating lists published by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). The new lists came into effect on 1 April 2005 and will last for five years. Rating lists are available at the VOA’s offices and online.  In 2006/07 the rate in the pound was ?p.

The Council is responsible for collecting domestic waste and promoting the recycling of household waste.  In 2006/07, 600 kg of waste per head was collected and 29% of household waste recycled and 7% composted.  For more information about recycling click here.
