Population projections are calculated to give an idea of the growth of the population over the coming years.
Projections may be trend-based (assuming past trends in births, deaths and migration etc will continue at the same rate in the future) or policy-based (these use policies, for example, on the level of dwellings required to determine the likely population in the future).
2006-Based Sub-National Population Projections
The Office for National Statistics produce trend-based sub-national population projections. The latest set are the 2006-Based Sub-national Projections. These are constrained to the 2006 Mid-Year Population Estimates.

2006-Based Housing Constrained Population Projections
The latest projections produced jointly by Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole are also 2006-based. However unlike the ONS projections these are policy-based. The projected population is constrained to the level of housing as set out in the Draft South West Regional Spatial Strategy as proposed to be amended by the Panel's Report.
