 Love Food Hate Waste Facts

  • 6.7 million tonnes of food is thrown away by UK households every year.
  • Wasting food costs the average family £420 a year 
  • If we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the CO2 impact would be the same as taking 1 in 5 cars off the road.
  • Each day in Britain, we waste 7 million slices of bread, 5.1 million potatoes, 1 million slices of ham, 1.3 million yoghurt and yoghurt drinks

Bournemouth Council together with Dorset County Council is supporting the "Love Food, Hate Waste" campaign which aims to raise awareness of the need to reduce the amount of food that we waste, and how doing this will benefit us as consumers and the environment.

There are plenty of top tips available on what can be done to improve the way we shop, store, cook and eat our food plus recipe cards for making the most of your leftovers.

There is also advice available on portion sizes and explanation of food date labels to make sure food isn't thrown away unnecessarily.

Top tips on buying and storing food.

  • Try not to over buy, especially on food that will go off
  • With non-perishables buy in bulk - reduces packaging and saves money
  • Buy food items from local producers and farmers markets where possible where you can buy exactly what you need.
  • Draw up menus in advance and compile a shopping list before hitting the shops
  • Only purchase buy-one-get-one-free items if you can freeze the second one
  • Check out portion sizes using the online calculator to decide how much of each item you need before shopping
  • If you do have leftover food there are plenty of recipe ideas available to help you use the most of it.
