Big Bin Little Bin
Recycling just got easier!

Bournemouth Borough Council introduced its new kerbside recycling scheme, Big Bin Little Bin, in September 2006.  It means you can now recycle the following materials on your doorstep:

• Paper
• Cardboard
• Cans
• Plastic bottles
• Glass
• aerosols

and much more!

STOP PRESS! you can now include windowed envelopes and bottle tops in your kerbside recycling bin!

Each household should have a big bin and a little bin.  The big bin is for recycling and is collected fortnightly and the little bin is for refuse and is collected weekly.

One year on and the new scheme is having a tremendous effect on the amount of recycling being collected in Bournemouth.

How the stats stack up for the first year!

Total waste (tonnes) 2005/6 2006/7 Increase/Decrease
Kerbside recycling 8,505 13,549 Up 59.3 per cent
Kerbside refuse 61,140 49,438 Down 19.1 per cent
Household composting (green waste) 414 806 Up 94.7 per cent

Overall if you include all recyclable waste collected from Big Bin together with compostable waste, items taken to Millhams Community Recycling Centre and the bring sites, Bournemouth residents have gone from recycling 34 per cent of their waste to 41 per cent this year!

Residents have been working hard at sorting their waste and we would like to thank you for all your hard efforts and for making recycling work in Bournemouth.

For more details on what can go in the kerbside recycling scheme a comprehensive Recycle More information guide is available online or in hard copy by calling the recycling hotline on 451199 or e-mailing the recycling team. An updated version of the guide will be available shortly  - please note the kind of materials which can be recycled are constantly being extended and not everything will be mentioned in the current edition of the Guide but updates are published online.

The hard copy of the guide includes an information booklet, a yes please/no thanks bin sticker, collection calendar and house number stickers for both bins.

If you have any questions regarding Big Bin Little Bin call the recycling hotline 01202 451199 or email the recycling team.

Together we can recycle more and waste less!
