Civil Partnership

When you decide to enter into a civil partnership, it is up to you whether you decide to have a ceremony or not.

It is a legal requirement that you must acknowledge you are entering into a civil partnership by reading or saying aloud the declaration required by law as stated on the Civil Partnership Schedule.

This schedule must be signed by both parties entering into the civil partnership and also by two witnesses. This is known as the 'formation of the civil partnership'.

We have a very flexible approach to civil partnerships and apart from the legal declarations required for signing the Civil Partnership Schedule, it is entirely up to you how you would like your ceremony to progress. Couples may enter into civil partnerships at the Register Office or ‘approved premises’ (hotels etc) and may opt for a quiet signing of the Register only, or may choose a ceremony in front of family and friends. Go to the Town Hall Weddings and Civil Partnerships pages for more details on ceremony options.
