Mortuary Service

The Mortuary handles deaths in the community that have been referred to the Coroner.

The Bournemouth Public Mortuary is provided by Bournemouth Borough Council on behalf of the H M Coroner for Bournemouth, Poole and the Eastern District of Dorset. The Bournemouth Public Mortuary receives and cares for those who die within the community of the Bournemouth and Christchurch areas. The local hospitals, i.e. the Poole General Hospital and the Royal Bournemouth and Chirstchurch Hopsital, have their own mortuaries for those that die in hospital.

Services

  • to provide facilities for the receipt and storage of bodies under the jurisdiction of H M Coroner, H M Coroners Act 1988 and Coroners Rules 1984
  • to assist pathologists with autopsies to determine the cause of death
  • to assist Forensic Pathologists with autopsies in cases where criminal charges may arise
  • to provide facilities for the viewing of bodies by relatives and friends
  • to provide information and advice about autopsies and what to do following a death
  • to be an integral part of the Emergency Service with its Major Incident Procedures in conjunction with the Police, HM Armed Forces and the Health Authority
