A Lasting Record...
Books of Remembrance have been placed in the Chapel of Memory at the Crematorium to provide a lasting and permanent record of, and memorial to, persons who have been cremated at the Bournemouth Crematorium. The Books are beautifully bound in full dark red leather with a richly tooled design, the leaves being of the finest hand-made parchment paper. The inscriptions are carefully executed by hand by a modern craftsperson.
Two double pages are provided in each book for every day of the year, and the Books are laid open on the corresponding day in the oak cabinets which have been specially designed to display them.
Entries may be seen on the Anniversary Date every year, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. including weekends; the current Books are always open for inspection during these times. Entries may also be viewed at other times, and full details will be sent to the applicant when the entry has been completed in the Book.
Your chosen entry may consist of between 2 and 5 lines. We politely ask that the first line consists of the surname followed by any first names. Each line can consist of up to 30 characters, and the inscription may be illuminated with an emblem such as a badge, spray of flowers or coat of arms. The Council reserves the right to vary or abbreviate any inscription that is too lengthy to be written in the space provided. Please note that the final arrangement and style of the entry is at the discretion of the artist.
You may wish to consider entering the year of death in your inscription as the year does not appear at the top of the page – only the day and month are inscribed on each page as the Books cover several years. Please note if no date for recording the inscription is given, the entry will be inscribed under the date of death.
If you would like to place an entry in the Book of Remembrance, please contact us and request a Book of Remembrance application form. Please then complete the form and return it to us with the appropriate remittance, making cheques payable to 'Bournemouth Borough Council' .
Receipts will not be issued for cheques unless requested. Please note that the Books got the Calligraphers to be updated at periodic intervals - please contact the office for advice on the deadline for applications. We will advise you when the entry has been completed.
