Deaths must be registered within 5 days of the death occurring.
Special arrangements are available for families who, for religious reasons, need to bury the deceased within twenty four hours of death. Please contact your Funeral Directors who will make these arrangements for you.
Registrars are also available on Saturday & Sunday mornings between the hours of 9:30am & 11:30am on 07790 764227.
Those who are able to register a death in order of legal preference are:
- Relative of the deceased (present at the death or in attendance during the last illness)
- Person present at the death
- Owner/manager/occupier of the rest home/residential home or private residence
- The person responsible for burial or cremation of the body
If the death occurred in Bournemouth but relatives live in another district you can made a Death by Declaration Registration at your local Register Office.
The Registrar will need certain information from you so they can register the death. They will ask you for:
A Medical Certificate of Cause of Death issued by the certifying Doctor or Coroner
- The date and place of death
- Full forenames and surname (and the maiden name if the deceased was a woman who had married)
- Date and place of birth (town and country)
- Occupation (and if the deceased was a married woman or a widow the name and occupation of her husband)
- Usual address
- Whether the deceased was in receipt of a pension or allowance from public funds - if the deceased was married the date of birth of the surviving widow or widower.
- If it can be found, the medical card with the National Health Service number on it.
There is no fee for registering a death. If you require certificates at the time of registering, the fee is £3.50 for each one. Click on the main Bournemouth Registration Service webpage for information about how to obtain a copy of a certificate at other times.

Family tree searches can be undertaken by Bereavement Services staff, or you may search the records yourself.
Please telephone the Bereavement Services office on 01202 526238 (during normal office hours) to make an appointment if you wish to search the records yourself.
If you would like Bereavement Services staff to undertake the search for you, please provide as much information as possible, including full name of the deceased and date of death. If you don’t know the date of death please provide an approximate year or range of years to aid the search.
