Memorialisation & Grave Space Maintenance

Some people can gain great comfort from having a memorial in memory of their loved one, and at Bournemouth we offer a variety of memorials. Please be aware that you are under no obligation to purchase a memorial. Bereavement Services staff would be pleased to offer any advice and help with selecting the right choice for you.

The following memorials are available:

The Book of Remembrance as described is the only permanent memorial at the Crematorium.

Memorial Rose Plaque

Kerb Tablet

Memorial Seat

Sanctum 2000 Vault

Cemetery memorials can be purchased through a monumental mason. Click the link to the online Yellow Pages to search for one in your area. Memorials must conform to current Council regulations, and applications must be made to the Council before a memorial can be placed on a grave. Your monumental mason will complete the application form for you and advise you of the necessary fees.

Grave Space Maintenance

Any person wishing the Council to undertake the maintenance, or maintenance and planting, of a grave space should request and complete a Grave Space Maintenance application form from the contact details below and forward it to the Bereavement Services Manager together with the appropriate fee.  Cheques should be made payable to ‘Bournemouth Borough Council’. On receipt of this application the maintenance service will commence.  For periods of two to ten years, an Agreement document will be prepared and sent to you.

The Council reserve the right to refuse an application received for maintenance and also terminate at any time any arrangement made giving one month’s notice and returning any fees paid for the unexpired portion of the term in respect of which a fee shall have been paid

The maintenance of a grave space includes the cutting and upkeep of any turf, the clearance of weeds, and the washing once per year of any memorial thereon. If the grave space has been planted by the Council, maintenance will include the provision and upkeep of the plants. The Council will not be responsible for the maintenance of the actual memorial, other than the annual washing. The Council will not be responsible for making good replacing or repairing any memorial erected or to be erected on or over the grave space which may become decayed or damaged otherwise than through the negligence of the Council or any of their employees.
