You can get married or have a civil partnership in any Register Office or licensed venue (e.g. hotel, stately home, school etc.) in England and Wales and you don’t have to live in Bournemouth to have your ceremony here.
Wherever you choose to marry or have your civil partnership, all couples have to give Notice of Marriage or Civil Partnership at their local Register Office indicating that they are free to marry or have a civil partnership. Now the law has changed, both partners have to attend the office in person. Notice cannot be given by a friend or relative. If you live in different districts you will each have to attend your local office and there is a fee of £33.50 each, payable at the time. Marriages or Civil partnerships can be arranged twelve months in advance of the date of the ceremony. If you do not want to give such advance notice, applications must be received 16 days before the date of your ceremony.
Bournemouth Registration Services will request some of the following documents:
- Birth certificate
- Passport or identity card
- Home Office Travel document (foreign nationals)
- Parental consent form (for someone under 18 years old)
- Decree absolute
- Death certificate of previous partner
- Deed poll document
All must be original documents, photocopies will not be accepted

Couples may enter into marriages or civil partnerships at the Register Office or ‘approved premises’ (hotels etc) and may opt for a quiet signing of the Register only, or may choose a ceremony in front of family and friends. A free brochure showing the venues in Bournemouth and the cost of the ceremony can be obtained by contacting Registration Services, or click on the left hand link to view or download our Ceremony Guide.
