Wherever you choose to marry or have your civil partnership, all couples have to give Notice of Marriage or Civil Partnership at their local Register Office indicating that they are free to marry or have a civil partnership.  Now the law has changed, both partners have to attend the office in person. Notice cannot be given by a friend or relative. If you live in different districts you will each have to attend your local office and there is a fee of £30 each, payable at the time. Marriages or Civil partnerships can be arranged twelve months in advance of the date of the ceremony. If you do not want to give such advance notice, applications must be received 16 days before the date of your ceremony.

The Superintendent Registrar will request some of the following documents:

  • Birth certificate
  • Passport or identity card
  • Home Office Travel document (foreign nationals)
  • Parental consent form (for someone under 18 years old)
  • Decree absolute
  • Death certificate of previous partner
  • Deed poll document

All must be original documents, photocopies will not be accepted.

If you wish to obtain a licence for your premises to hold civil weddings and civil partnerships you must be a commercial business.  The law does not allow for private dwellings to be licenced.   Please read the guidance notes carefully and complete the attached form, returning it to the address given with the appropriate fee.
