Nothing About Us Without Us!
Positive Towards Disability
Housing Landlord Services is positive about the abilities and disabilities of its tenants, leaseholders, staff, councillors and customers. We call these our stakeholders.
The Council itself displays the two ticks symbol of being positive towards disability on job advertisements and has an internal disability working group.
We want to challenge stigma, prejudice and discrimination around disability and need your help to do this.
We also fully support the Council's adoption of the Social Model of Disability. This model says that the "problem" of disability comes from social structures and attitudes, rather than a person's difficulty or medical condition.
Accessibility
We provide level access to our Housing offices for those that have physical access issues. We also provide support to those tenants that need adaptations to their home and we work closely with our occupational therapist colleagues to achieve this where possible.
Not all disabilities are obvious
Of course not all disabilities are visible, there are many forms of disability that are not apparently obvious. We will soon be doing more work to consult with our stakeholders on issues like plain English to assist those with learning difficulties and any other areas where we can provide support & assistance.
We will be consulting with local organisations such as Disability Wessex and the Bournemouth Speaking Out Forum and Dorset Occupational Therapy Services (DOTS).
We also want to consult with our disabled tenants and leaseholders. If you are one and you would like to get involved please contact us using the details below.
Disability - Have Your Say!
Bournemouth Borough Council provided an opportunity for disabled residents, their familities and carers to have their say at the Pavilion on 10th November 2006. Housing Landlord Services supported this event and provided a display to highlight disability issues. Staff were on hand to consult and share experiences with.
A statement that came out of this event was 'Nothing About Us Without Us'. This means that disabled people want to be included in all services and changes and we support this idea.
The comments from the event were fed into the Council's Disability Equality Scheme and this was published in early December 2006.
