Environmental Maintenance
Sited within the boundaries of the Council-owned land as the Highway Authority and maintained by an external contractor to the Council (Banyards Ltd of Wimborne), are approximately:
· 28,000 trees
· 482,000 m2 of grass verges
· 240,000 m2 of shrubs
· 240 planters and tubs
· 28,000 m of public rights of way
· 4,500 m of hedges
During the growing season, grass is cut to maintain highway safety, particularly at junctions and the shrubs and hedges are trimmed.
During the winter, operations to prune overhanging branches sometimes require traffic signals or diversions to maintain safety, but these are always kept to a minimum.
Our contractor also provides an out-of-hours emergency service to attend traffic accidents and storm damage involving trees.
Verges
The majority of grass verges adjacent to roads are within the public highway and therefore come under the responsibility of Bournemouth Borough Council as Highway Authority.
In fulfilling its responsibilities as Highway Authority, the Council is required to keep verges safe and unobstructed and this is particularly important at road junctions where clear visibility for motorists and pedestrians is important.
Bournemouth Borough Council contracts Banyards Ltd of Wimborne to cut the grass on the 482,000 m2 of verges and funding is allocated annually through the routine highways maintenance budget to ensure that the work is continued throughout the growing season.
The Council has a policy of using fuels, and herbicides, where their use is unavoidable, that minimize damage to the environment.

Trees & Hedges Obstructions
Bournemouth has a large number of trees and hedges, both highway and privately owned, that must also be maintained to give safe clearances over the roads, pavements and footpaths. It is sometimes necessary to close pavements and footpaths for safety purposes during cutting and pruning works. You can also view our webpage concerning vegetation overhanging the footpath.
