Drivers Courses

The drivers courses are organised by:

  • Dorset County Council
  • Dorset Health Authority
  • Poole Borough Council

Car Drivers - Driving Update

This is a half-day discussion course, aimed at helping you to update your knowledge and skills, and is designed to help you to deal with ever changing road conditions.

The course provides an opportunity to share experiences and gain driving tips in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, whether you are a new driver, have been driving for many years or are returning to driving after a break.

The tutors are experienced, specially trained driving instructors.

There will be group discussions including new driving techniques, changes in the law and Highway Code, keeping fit to drive, motorways, roundabouts and how to avoid crashes.

No driving is involved on the day, but you can book a 30 minute (no fee) or a one hour (cost of £18) drive with a trained driving observer in your own car, at a time and date convenient to you.

The fee is just £5 per person at present, for the theory session and short drive.

Car Drivers - Practical

It is not a test but an improver programme.

It takes the existing level of ability of each driver and aims to improve it where necessary, particularly in the areas of speed, overtaking and hazard spotting, the three major contributory factors to road crashes in Dorset. The instructors are specially trained, top Grades 5 or 6 Department of Transport Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs)

The ADI will offer advice and guidance as and when required and will give a summary at the end. Drivers who demonstrate an acceptable standard of competence and understanding are awarded a certificate in recognition of their achievement.

The programme consists of either:

  • A one hour driving session on an individual basis, or
  • If two or three drivers would like to go together (alternately driving) a two hour or three hour session can be arranged.

The advantage of two or three in the car is that the learning process continues even when not actually driving and a wider variety of road conditions can be covered.

The cost at present is £18 per driver if you provide the car. An additional fee will be charged if you would like the ADI to provide a car.
