Key Transport Issues
Environmental Pressures

The high quality of the built and natural environment of the area is well documented and widely recognised. This in itself has acted as a constraint on the development of the transport network. It has also attracted a large number of tourists which causes substantial increases in traffic during the summer months, particularly in coastal areas. There is concern that the impact of such large numbers of visitors is causing an adverse impact on the quality of the environment which attracts them to the area.

Future growth in the tourism and leisure sector is expected, but if this is to happen in a sustainable way, the issues of access and travelling within the area must be addressed.

Opportunities include:

  • Introducing measures to reduce the adverse impact of traffic in the most sensitive areas
  • Widen travel choice and in particular develop sustainable tourism initiatives
  • Seek to extend the tourist season and spread the peak over a longer period
