How was the Plan Prepared?
The Local Transport Plan has been prepared so that it supports the wider national and regional policies for transport. National legislation has established targets to be set for meeting air pollution objectives and reducing road accident casualties. The Government has also issued considerable advice and guidance on the promotion of public transport and other alternatives to the car. The plan has also taken into account the numerous development plans that cover the area.
Involving the Community
Public participation is a vital part of the Local Transport Plan process and has provided a great opportunity for the wider community to become involved in developing the authorities' ideas. The Provisional Local Transport Plan, launched to the public in October 1999, provided the basis of a six-month period of consultation during which the public were engaged on a number of fronts including:-
- Public Forum/Discussion Groups.
- Household Questionnaires.
- Leaflet drop (via libraries and free newspapers).
- Round Table Discussions with Key businesses and Stakeholders.
- Regular Liaison with adjacent District and Borough Councils.
- Exhibition, both of the plan and specific proposals within it.
- A two-day seminar on Local Transport Issues.
- Written responses on the Provisional Plan.
