Disability Issues

It is the Councils' policy that all improvements or alterations to the transportation network should take full account of the needs of people with physical or other types of disabilities. The following problems and opportunities were highlighted in the public consultation exercise:

Problems

  • General lack of facilities for people with disabilities
  • High proportion of elderly people in the population (and increasing)
  • Dispersed population over wide area
  • Lack of communication
  • Waste of existing transport capacity
  • Opportunities

  • Improve concessionary fares for people with disabilities and older people
  • Improve access to and on public transport
  • Work with Shopmobility
  • Improved links between Authorities and other agencies
  • Inter-agency working on transport issues
  • Specific policies and actions have been developed and approved for a wide range of areas, which include:

    • Provision on public transport
    • Special bus services
    • Parking facilities and provision
    • The design of highway maintenance and improvement schemes
    • Pedestrian routes, needs and facilities
