Links with Surrounding Authorities

Dorset County Council as Highway Authority for Christchurch completely surrounds the two Unitary Authorities of Bournemouth and Poole. The three Highway Authorities work closely together in developing transport policies for the area and taking joint action on implementation where this is appropriate.

The Greenways Initiative

This initiative is led by Greenlink, a partnership of South East Dorset's six local authorities. The Countryside Agency is part funding the initiative for an initial period of three years as a national demonstration project.

Greenways and Quiet Roads give better mobility and access for people on foot, bicycle or horseback, giving benefit to their health and to the environment.

  • Greenways are off-road routes designed for shared use and excluding motorised traffic.
  • Quiet Roads are minor rural roads where traffic measures are used to improve their attractiveness and safety for non-motorised users. The routes are in and around the towns of South East Dorset, increasing transport choice and ease of access to open space and countryside as well as providing the means to achieve Green Employee Travel Plans, safer routes to schools and targets for improving health.

The promotion of Greenways and Quiet Roads offers a number of opportunities that include:

  • safe routes to schools
  • routes for Green Travel Plans
  • both utility and leisure journeys
  • linkage into public rights of way, walking, cycling and public transport networks
  • future development linked to the non-motorised transport network
  • greater accessibility for disabled people and those without a car
  • health benefits through links to Dorset Health Improvement Plan, Health Works
  • improved community safety through redesigning informal access areas and public open space
  • opportunity for sustainable tourism and related economic benefits

The identified pilot networks are:

  • The Roman road from Upton to Ashington
  • The Bourne Valley from Canford Heath to central Bournemouth
  • The Mude Valley from Mudeford Quay to Burton Common
  • The Hurn Link from Throop to West Moors via the Airport
  • Northmoor Greenway from Wareham station to Wareham Forest

These routes will be planned to include linkages to local schools and facilities, public transport, countryside areas, road cycleway network, public rights of way and country tracks and lanes. Other potential Greenways are disused railway lines and corridors formerly identified for road schemes where significant amounts of linear open space exist.
