    Freight Distribution

    The movement of goods vehicles, particularly the largest vehicles were a major concern expressed during the public participation process. In particular, there was concern over the impact of heavy traffic travelling through residential areas with safety, pollution, severance and intimidation being seen as key issues.

    The efficient distribution of goods is critical to our economy and our quality of life. The LTP area, like the SW Region, has little heavy industry, thus freight movement is predominantly smaller consignments to dispersed destinations, where road is the most suitable mode and will remain so.

    The freight strategy strikes a balance between meeting the concerns of society and maintaining the prosperity and competitiveness of local businesses. Key action areas include:

    • A clearly-defined routing strategy for heavy goods vehicles;
    • Encouraging more freight onto railways;
    • Reducing the impact of lorries in residential areas;
    • Designated loading and unloading areas to be considered in town centre Pedestrianisation schemes; and
    • Developing a freight quality partnership with freight and local businesses.
