Local Transport Plan - Widening Travel Choice
Taxis and Private Hire Vehicles

The role of taxis in the Conurbation, in addition to providing transport during the late-evening periods, includes:

  • Local authority contracts for social service and education transport during the daytime, but which can also include emergency out of hours work
  • Transport for local residents unable to use conventional public transport and without access to a car
  • Transport for tourists and holidaymakers unfamiliar with the area
  • Travel for business visitors, either short-term or those attending conferences
  • Providing the local link to other transport modes at Poole ferry port, Bournemouth International Airport and other rail, bus and coach stations

The Local Transport Plan seeks to achieve the following:

  • To make taxis and private hire vehicles more readily available and accepted as a provider of local public transport, by both the public and other public transport suppliers
  • To improve the opportunities for interchange between taxis/private hire vehicles and other transport modes, either through improved signage or relocated facilities
  • To improve and standardise the access allowed to bus lanes and bus-only roads in the conurbation for taxis and private hire vehicles, and to ensure that entitled vehicles are readily identified
  • To improve and build upon the existing relationships between the local authorities and their respective trade associations and to encourage discussions across authorities and trade representatives at transport forums and seminars
  • To encourage the relationship between each of the licensing offices and other service units/departments within their authority to improve consultation on planning and development matters and the sighting and provision of taxi ranks
  • To continue to work with trade associations and other authorities to seek improvements in the overall quality of taxis and an increase in the number of taxis that cater for people that have mobility problems
  • To simplify the licensing process for all licence holders across the conurbation
  • To provide a sufficient number of taxi ranks in the right locations
  • To improve the visibility and effectiveness of the services provided by taxis and private hire vehicles
