The majority of Supporting People funded services are ‘accommodation based’ meaning that service users live in the accommodation where the support is provided. If a service user no longer needs the support they will move on to other accommodation.
Supporting People also funds ‘floating support’. If you are living in your own home with no support but feel you are at risk of losing your home or not managing with daily life then a floating support worker can visit you each week in your home. The support worker can help with tasks such as sorting out debts, speaking to your landlord and accessing other services such as healthcare.
This support stays with a person for as long as they need it, up to a maximum of two years and when is no longer needed, floats off to another person who needs support.
Floating support is also useful for people who are moving on from supported housing and need a low level of support whilst they settle into their new home and get used to living in a more independent setting.

Diversity of Provision for a Diversity of Need
Bournemouth Supporting People, from an early stage, recognised the value of diversity in the provision of floating support services. In practice this means that vulnerable people in Bournemouth can choose to be referred to a service that best suits their particular needs and preferences. All of the organisations providing Floating Support have an established track record of providing quality services and have actively worked for the continuous improvement of quality within the sector.

Bournemouth Floating Support Providers Forum – Coordination by Cooperation
The clear commitment to promoting choice in Bournemouth Floating Support Services was matched by a desire to ensure that services are as coordinated as possible and represent excellent value for money. With these aims in mind Bournemouth Supporting People have supported and facilitated the creation of the Bournemouth Floating Support Provider Forum.
All the member organisations of this forum are positive about the benefits of adopting a collaborative approach to the development and expansion of floating support services in Bournemouth.
Meeting at least on a quarterly basis the floating support forum has implemented a ‘Common Application Form’ as a first major step towards stream lining access to floating support in Bournemouth. Effectively this means that once prospective service users and referrers have completed the new application form it can be accepted by any of the current providers. This will significantly reduce the paperwork associated with applying for Bournemouth floating support services in the future.
