Money managment and budgeting- useful reading
It is really important that providers are supporting service users to become as independent as possible, especially managing their own money and budgeting. Visual aids, interactive and creative approaches often help service users to engage with, learn and practice these skills, no matter what stage they start at or aim to reach.
The team will be offering training on money management to providers in the near future and will be sending out details shortly.
A number of resourses can be found below, including links to helpful websites and interactive workbooks and tools:
On the Learn About Money website, service users can work through different sections as fast or as slow as is comfortable for them. The different sections include Understanding Money, Saving and Borrowing, Money Management and lots more. You can support service users to work through it on the computer or print the workbook off to keep.
On the Money Matters website, service users can find out lots of advice and there are some fun activities to help practice things like using a cash machine or writing cheques.
You might also find these websites helpful:
Money Basics www.moneybasics.co.uk
Money Saving Expert www.moneysavingexpert.com.
The Meaning of Money report contains interesting information about the ways in which vulnerable people may percieve money, and ways in which to address this. At the back of the report there is a workbook which provides a set of five keyworking sessions on the following topics:
1. Attitude to money
2. Budgeting and spending
3. Banking and saving
4. Borrowing and debt
5. Looking to the future
We hope you find these resources helpful. Please let us know how you have used these resources and any feedback you may have from service users.
